etee was developed by TG0(www.tg0.co.uk) a technology start-up based in London, UK. TG0 is a 20 people team, currently working on commercialising a polymer material sensor technology. TG0 was co-founded by Ming Kong, Dr. Liucheng Guo and Mick Lin in 2015 and has been working with manufacturers and brands in the automotive, gaming and consumer electronics fields. etee is TG0’s first consumer-facing product.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everyone! So far, we have generated most interests from 3 main groups:
VR and AR users: etee SteamVR can support all games on SteamVR.
PC Gamers: etee can be used as both a general-purpose input device to control current games, and as a functional VR controller with full five-finger sensing.
Developers and Makers: etee controllers can be easily integrated into existing systems for IoT hardware and other devices such as drones. We offer a wide range of software development kits (SDKs) in Unity, C++ and Python that developers can leverage to bring new creations to life.
We have spent more than a year designing etee’s form factor. A lot of the time was spent on fitting functions into a compact body, making sure that etee stacks up strong against all legacy VR controllers. In addition to the main finger-sensing and trackpad functions, etee further incorporated single-tap, double-tap, 2 extra proximity sensors under the LED lens and 3 built-in gestures as well as limitless gestures that you can map according to your preference.
After etee Enterprise Business Kit was released back in 2019, we shipped more than 100 prototypes around the world and have never heard of any customer feedback relating to being limited by the lack of buttons. On the contrary, they are all pleasantly surprised by how little they actually need to rely on buttons in VR.
We see amazing innovations in both areas and would love to collaborate. From our point of view, being a group of casual gamers, gloves do not provide the one-size-fits-all flexibility of etee. They are not comfortable, easy-to-wear and can cause hygiene issues, particularly for elongated periods of use or multiple users.
Other control technologies such as camera tracking do not offer 360° of freedom. The user generally has to look at their hands for them to be tracked. Most in-air tracking technologies also fail to communicate the user’s useable gestures and triggers making them hard to learn. Based on our user research, having something in hand offers reassurance, tactile feedback and an important sense of control. And we believe etee is that perfectly-crafted in-hand object.
No, you can use either one controller or two. One of our user test participants actually managed to turn 1 etee into a Photoshop shortcut controller and paired it with a tablet.
We consider ourselves to be the “Switzerland of VR” in the sense that we can integrate etee finger sensing with most ecosystems and tracking solutions. We are in talks with various HMD manufacturers to try and integrate etee functionality into their offering. These talks are ongoing.
Specifically addressing the Oculus point. We have not secured a partnership at this time and don’t have a clear way forward with Facebook or Oculus. We are always open to bringing etee technology to their userbase.
The dev kit is a development platform and powerful maker platform. With it’s 3DOF positional tracking and TG0 finger sensing it can be used to build new experiences, games and control technology. You can think of them as Joycons with more advanced features that you can connect to a PC and play or develop. We also offer a robust array of SDKs to enable developers to build with etee dev kit.
If you are familiar with technology you could attempt to achieve 6DOF tracking with hacks like Kinect camera tracking. But this is not supported by TG0.
Once the controllers ship, they will be fully standalone SteamVR controllers. As long as you have a SteamVR compatible HMD and Lighthouses v1 or v2 you are good to go! And best of all you can still detach the controllers and use the SteamVR version as a simpler controller for your other PC games.
With etee SteamVR, you can play any game and any app on SteamVR. Surgeon Simulator, Half-life, Neos, Gravity Sketch, Superhot... just to name a few.
With etee Dev Kit, you can map etee trackpad and gestures to existing console controller or keyboard functions using etee SDK’s key-binding function. We think it is most fun playing Surgeon Simulator PC, Moto GP, Destiny 2 and Borderlands with etee.
We are currently talking to a range of leading games designers about expanding in-game functions to capture etee’s full potential. If you believe there are cool ways to expand etee’s applications, or we are missing a point, please let your voice be heard. We are here to listen and improve.
